May
It's time to pay tribute! May celebrates holidays honoring exceptional people, such as mothers and the men and women in the Military Services. Mother's Day has been around since 1908 and May's designation as National Flower Month followed, not just by co-incidence. When I was young my family followed the Southern tradition of wearing a rose to church on Mother's Day. Red signified a living mother and a white rose honored a mother who was no longer living. I am blessed to be able to wear a red rose this Mother's Day. Memorial Day was first celebrated in 1868 by decorating the graves of fallen Civil War soldiers by strewing flowers on them, but the holiday now honors all soldiers. Don't forget to fly your flag on May 28!
